In the 19th century, a major cultural shift was witnessed in Japan. The country experienced radical political, cultural, and social transformations. In the process, the Samurai were reprimanded for bloody combats. They were also encouraged to focus on the use of grappling techniques to gain control. These changes provided the environment necessary for the development of Jiu-Jitsu.

In the early 1900’s, Jiu-Jitsu was adapted to be more effective during war. Moreover, it became a competitive sport. As a result, Jiu-Jitsu grew to become one of the most popular martial arts in the world. Today, Jiu-Jitsu is a regulated sport, organized by governing bodies like the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF).

Although the Gracie family had a national reputation, the art of jiu jitsu has many variations, which make it difficult to trace its origins. Some of the rudimentary forms of the art can be traced to ancient Greek and Egyptian ruins. Another tradition traces its roots to Native American tribes.

One of the main influences on the history of Jiu-Jitsu was the introduction of Japanese Martial Arts to the Brazilian athletes. Carlos Gracie was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu by Mitsuyu Maeda, a student of the legendary martial artist Jigoro Kano. After learning from Maeda for a few years, Carlos moved to Brazil and opened the country’s first Jiu-Jitsu school.

By the middle of the twentieth century, Carlos had established the Gracie Family and his first school in the city of Rio de Janeiro. He later moved to Sao Paulo and developed his art further.

His sons Helio and Rolls Gracie refined their father’s Jiu-Jitsu art by using wrestling moves. They also developed the first point systems for Jiu-Jitsu competition. Their efforts made Jiu-Jitsu the popular sport it is today.

Helio fought under the tutelage of his father, and was a national hero. He took over the family business when Carlos became older. Eventually, the Gracie family created a system of Jiu-Jitsu instruction in Brazil, America, and other countries.

Nowadays, Jiu-Jitsu is practiced by people in all walks of life, from the military to the average citizen. There are various benefits from this martial art, including increased physical fitness and self-knowledge. You also develop a higher level of mental stability, and an increased ability to react quickly in defensive situations.
